Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board (LWETB) has called on the government to address inequalities in the education sector.

At a briefing event in Buswells Hotel, Dublin, representatives from LWETB met with members of the Oireachtas to advocate for the priorities outlined in the #SupportYourLocalETB campaign. The briefing, organised by Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), saw attendance from Westmeath TDs Sorca Clarke and Robert Troy, and Longford’s Deputy Joe Flaherty.

ETBI and its members are urging the government to support the following four priorities of the #SupportYourLocalETB campaign:

  1. Expand the number and visibility of Community National Schools nationwide.

  2. Increase the Deputy Principal allocation in ETB post-primary schools with DEIS designation.

  3. Boost funding for Further Education and Training (FET) to match the proportion of learners and allocate €600m for the FET Colleges of the Future project, set to start in 2028.

  4. Restore funding for youth work to pre-austerity levels and ensure pay parity for youth workers.
