LWETB students recently crowned champions at the Longford Post Primary Tech Championships 2024.

Winning Project: Ballymahon Vocational School students Robin Kearns and Emily Bolger created ‘Spacelink’, an innovative toy using Micro:bit technology to assist communication for non-verbal children and those with additional needs. Judges praised their exceptional programming skills and creativity.

The Longford Post Primary Tech Championships 2024, held on December 11, challenged fifth-year computer science students to apply classroom learning to real-world problems. Over 30 students from Meán Scoil Mhuire, Ballymahon Vocational School, and Templemichael College showcased 16 projects.

Award Highlights

  • Microsoft Award: ‘The Internationals’ by Templemichael College students, featuring a web design project on Longford landmarks.

  • Innovation Award: ‘Bin it Buddy’ by Ballymahon VS students, a touch-free, hygienic bin for hospitals.

  • Ericsson Award: ‘Planning Permission Stats’ by Meán Scoil Mhuire students, analyzing Longford planning application data.

  • Climate Action Award: ‘Quiet Time’ by Ballymahon VS students, addressing noise pollution with Micro:bit technology.

  • Best Presented Project: ‘Some Coding Dudes’ by Templemichael College students, a business calculator for enterprises.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Mark Casey commended all participants, saying, “Our students are excelling in STEM and have bright futures ahead.” Chief Executive Paddy Mahon highlighted the competition’s real-world impact, celebrating the talent and innovation displayed.

Special thanks were given to the schools, teachers, judges, and sponsors, including Longford County Council, Microsoft Ireland, Ericsson Ireland, and IPB. This year’s championships showcased the exceptional creativity and potential of Longford’s students.
