Templemichael College Receives Approval to Move Forward with New SEN Unit

A significant milestone has been reached in the development of a new Special Educational Needs (SEN) unit at Templemichael College in Longford, as the project has been officially approved to progress to tender stage.

This SEN unit will provide state-of-the-art facilities, creating an inclusive environment for students requiring additional support. It is part of a broader initiative by the Department of Education to improve educational resources across Ireland. The unit will feature dedicated classrooms, sensory areas, quiet spaces and a sensory garden, all designed for tailored learning experiences for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other complex needs.

LWETB has expressed its commitment to driving the project forward, highlighting the importance of providing accessible education for all students. In a statement, Chief Executive (Acting) Brian Higgins said, “This project is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance educational provision in the region. We are dedicated to ensuring that every student, regardless of their needs, can succeed.”

The Principal, Sorcha Nic Dhonnacha, welcomes the development which will enhance the facilities in Templemichael College to cater for the 2 classes of ASD students. Sorcha stated “Every child with ASD deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential within our education system. We welcome this news and the opportunities it gives our students”.

Once operational, the new facility will significantly enhance Templemichael College’s ability to cater to students requiring specialised educational support, contributing to LWETB’s mission of fostering supportive learning environments across our schools and centres.
